About the
Teacher
Carrie Thompson has worked with
children most of her adult life. She taught
her first acting classes for
children at the age of 17, when her father said
to her one spring day "Get a summer
job or I"ll get one for you!" Carrie
and her best friend put a plan
together to have a 6 week theatre workshop for
5th and 6th graders at a local
elementary school. They thought they'd be
lucky to have 20 students. Imagine
their surprise when 80 enrolled! The
workshop produced 12 plays, and
rumor has it that a good time was had by all!
After that summer, Carrie knew
that children's theatre would always be
important to her. She moved to
New York at the age of 21, and enrolled in
acting, voice, speech and movement
classes at HB Studios. After three
months in the city, she won the
role of Nurse Flinn in the New York
production of "One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest." She played Nurse Flinn for
two years. She also worked as a
wardrobe assistant on the Broadway
production of "Same Time, Next
Year." Ok, it wasn't children's theatre, but
come on, it was the New York
stage!!
In addition to her New York
experiences, Carrie has performed in plays in
Vermont, Pennsylvania, Virginia and
Indiana. She has been directing
children's theatre for ten years,
and recently began to teach Acting Games
and Improvisation to the children
of Madison through the support of the
Madison Public Library and the
Madison Alliance Against Substance Abuse.
Carrie is also the director of the
Youth Choirs at Short Hills Congregational
Church.
Carrie and her husband, Monte,
have two teen-age sons.
