Ruth

Ruth was born near Kiev, Russia, as Raisa Komenetsky.   Her mother's family before the Russian Revolution owned sugar mills and a department store.  Ruth and her mother, Zhenia (Jennie) came to the US when Ruth was 9 years old to visit relatives, and never left.  Ruth said, in her later years, that her mother intended to leave her father and did so by letting the green card expire.  They obtained a divorce later via mail.  Ruth's father, Benjamin Komenetsky, was a soldier in WWII, and was killed in a bombing in Odessa.  Ruth always wanted to know where her father was buried, or at least, to be certain of where he was killed.

When Ruth and her mother came to the US, they, like many other immigrants, were given American names as they entered the country: Zhenia became Jennie, and Raisa became Ruth.

They lived with relatives in Boston for a time, but Jennie got a job helping a family whose mother was about to have another child.  The woman died in childbirth, and Jennie eventually married the widower, Mr. Rosner.  Ruth's half brother, David Rosner, was the child of Jennie and Mr. Rosner.

Sam

Sam Burd was born in Philadelphia not long after his family had immigrated from a small Russian town, Zvinisgorod, not far from where Ruth's family lived.  Sam was one of 10 children.  He worked in the pharmacy owned by Elmer Merz on Front St. and Susquehanah in Philadelphia, and earned a pharmicist's certification.  After a number of years, Sam and Ruth bought the pharmacy from Elmer Merz and lived above it in a very large house.

Information about both family histories is still needed.
